What is a snowscoot?
A snowscoot is a non-motorised snow vehicle specially designed for use on snow. It consists of two articulated boards, a fork and handlebars that make it easy to control your trajectory.
Popular for its fun and spectacular nature, it offers a different sense of freedom from skiing or snowboarding. Thanks to its upright position and handlebars, it is often intuitive to handle for people who have already ridden a bike, mountain bike or snowboard.
Snowscoots can be used on groomed pistes and, where permitted by the resort, in certain off-piste areas or snowparks.
How do you ride a snowscoot?
Snowscooting is relatively accessible, particularly for people who already know how to ski or snowboard.
The rider stands upright with their legs slightly bent to absorb changes in the terrain. Their feet are secured with straps, while a safety leash keeps the snowscoot attached in the event of a fall.
To turn, simply lean your body into the movement and put the boards on their edges, while braking is achieved by skidding, much like when skiing.
After just a few runs, the sensations quickly become very natural. You can then link turns smoothly and reach significant speeds while maintaining excellent manoeuvrability.
Where can you ride a snowscoot?
Not all ski resorts allow snowscooting. Some permit it throughout their ski area, while others only allow it on certain lifts or pistes, or in freeride areas or specific snowparks. Before your holiday, remember to check the regulations directly with the resort or its tourist office. Resorts where snowscooting is regularly practised include Le Grand-Bornand, La Plagne, Les Orres, Font-Romeu, Pra Loup and Superdévoluy.
