Sport 2000’s personalized advice for choosing your skis

Whether renting skis online or buying in-store, Sport 2000 experts will always assist you in selecting the right alpine ski length and finding a model that meets your needs.

Personalized recommendations can be provided based on your skiing level and preferences (on-piste, off-piste, ski touring, etc.), snow conditions, height, and weight. The consultant will always suggest a ski size that fits you, placing it next to you to check that it’s not too short or too long.

You’ll also receive advice on ski technical characteristics (rocker, parabolic ski, camber, etc.) and the latest technologies to maximize your performance.

What ski length for alpine skiing?

For alpine skiing, your skill level primarily determines the optimal ski length and waist width, for both men and women.

Ski level Length Waist width
Beginner Short skis to facilitate turns: 10–15 cm shorter than skier’s height 75–85 mm
Intermediate 5–10 cm shorter than skier’s height for better stability 70–80 mm
Advanced/Expert At height, or slightly longer (up to +5 cm) 70–80 mm, up to 60 mm for maximum speed, racing, and slalom

Ski length for freeride

Freeride skis, mainly used in fresh powder and off-piste terrain, differ from alpine skis: they are longer and wider with a rocker tip for better maneuverability in deep snow.

Choose a freeride ski 5 cm shorter to 10 cm longer than your height. The waist width should be 90–120 mm. All-mountain skis can be similar in length, but slightly narrower for versatility, allowing you to ski both groomed and powder slopes.

Ski length for freestyle

Proper freestyle ski sizing is important for freedom and maneuverability when performing tricks. Typically, they should be 5–10 cm shorter than your height, though it depends on your practice. In a snowpark, slightly shorter skis—or even at your height—are preferred.

The waist width should be slightly wider than classic alpine skis, between 85–100 mm for stability.

Freestyle skis also feature twin-tip design for skiing forward or backward and a soft flex to absorb landings.

Ski length for ski touring

For ski touring, the general rule is to choose a ski 5–10 cm shorter than your height with a waist around 80–90 mm. Longer skis can slow you on ascents and feel heavier.

Opt for a moderate rocker tip for better handling in variable snow.

For freerando skiing, choose slightly longer skis (up to your height) and wider (95–105 mm) for better descents.

Ski length for cross-country skiing

When choosing cross-country skis, first determine the style: classic or skating.

For classic skiing, choose skis 20–30 cm longer than your height. For skating, skis 10–15 cm longer provide better control and maneuverability.

Manufacturer recommendations also consider your weight, ski camber, and ideal length.

Don’t forget pole length: multiply your height in cm by 0.89 for skating and 0.83 for classic skiing.

Ski length for children

Children can start skiing from ages 2–3. Choosing the right skis for children ensures comfort, learning, and performance.

For beginners aged 3–6, skis should reach chest height to facilitate turning and learning the snowplow.

For intermediate children aged 7–12, Junior skis 5–15 cm shorter are suitable. For more advanced juniors, slightly longer skis improve control at higher speeds. Always ask a store consultant or ski instructor for advice based on age, level, and weight.
