Mountain bike rental: advantages, models and prices
Mountain biking is a flagship activity in the mountains in summer, which can satisfy both families with young children who want to go for nice rides and thrill-seekers in a Bike Park. But to fully enjoy it, you need to have the right bike! Opting for rental during your holidays is therefore a good solution: we explain why and give you all the useful information for rent your mountain bike.
In summary
Do you want to hurtle down mountain trails or explore the great outdoors by bike this summer? Mountain bike rental is the ideal solution to enjoy modern, perfectly maintained equipment adapted to the steep terrain. Our guide helps you make the right choice among the different types of bikes (cross-country, enduro, DH mountain bikes or electric-assist e-MTBs), informs you about the prices practiced in resorts, and explains how to benefit from the wise advice of our experts in our sports stores to ride safely.
Renting your mountain bike in the mountains: why is it a good idea?
Sometimes one might hesitate between buying and renting a mountain bike, with each solution having its advantages and disadvantages. Here, we explain all the good reasons to choose renting a mountain bike for your trip to the mountains.
Having a mountain bike adapted to mountain trails
To explore trails, even if they are not technical, it is essential to have a mountain bike, because a simple city bike and a road bike are not suitable for these terrains.
Renting a mountain bike in the mountains then guarantees access to bikes specially designed for steep terrain and specific disciplines (cross-country, enduro, downhill). These bikes are equipped with high-performance suspensions, powerful brakes, and adapted tires, thus offering an optimal experience, even on demanding trails.
Riding with the latest generation bikes
Rental shops often provide recent models, equipped with the latest technologies and regularly maintained. This allows you to discover innovations in the sector: lightweight frames, precise transmissions, and advanced suspension systems.
These equipments improve your riding sensations and comfort, especially on technical descents or arduous climbs. For enthusiasts, it's also an opportunity to try out high-end models without commitment.
Saving on the purchase and maintenance of a mountain bike
A high-performance mountain bike can cost several thousand euros, not counting regular maintenance costs (suspension overhaul, parts replacement). By opting for rental, you benefit from quality and well-maintained equipment without having to invest in expensive gear. It's an ideal solution for those who practice occasionally or who wish to test several disciplines before buying their own bike.
Simplifying logistics
Transporting a mountain bike to the mountains can be cumbersome: necessity of a suitable bike rack, storage constraints in the accommodation, risks of damage during transport.
Renting a bike directly on site eliminates these concerns. You travel light and stress-free, to make the most of your vacation with minimum constraints!
Benefiting from expert advice
If you are an experienced mountain biker, you may not need specific advice to equip yourself with a bike. However, if you cycle occasionally or are not used to mountain trails, renting is a good idea to benefit from informed advice. The in-store teams help you to choose the mountain bike best suited to your level and the routes you wish to explore. They can also adjust the bike to your body type to guarantee comfort and performance.
Testing complementary equipment
In addition to mountain bikes, shops often offer essential protections and accessories , such as helmets, knee pads, gloves, anti-theft devices, etc. It is also not uncommon for the helmet to be included in the bike rental price.
You can thus complete your equipment with quality gear, without overloading your luggage and riding safely.
Mountain bike rental: which bike model to choose?
Unlike in the city or countryside, the mountains offer a wide range of mountain biking disciplines. Each practice requires a suitable bike to maximize enjoyment and performance.
The types of bikes rented depend on the shop, but you generally have a choice between:
A cross-country mountain bike, which allows you to ride on fairly technical trails, but without necessarily a lot of downhill elevation gain;
An enduro mountain bike, for routes with climbs, but especially technical descents;
A DH bike, a full-suspension model designed for downhill courses;
A trail or all-mountain bike, which offers a good compromise for mountain hiking.
Each has its specificities in terms of weight, suspension, frame type, tires, etc., to offer the best sensations on each type of trail. The choice will therefore depend on what you plan to do: DH mountain bike for technical downhill trails in Bike Parks, trail mountain bike for a family hike, etc.
Don't forget the possibility of renting an e-MTB (electric mountain bike). It allows you to cover longer distances, which is ideal for discovering varied landscapes even on a single day. The electric mountain bike also has the advantage of facilitating ascents, allowing you to climb more easily to altitude to appreciate all the beauty of the mountains.
How much does mountain bike rental cost?
Sport 2000 stores do not all apply the same rates for mountain bike rental. However, we can give an average price range per day:
from 20 to 50 € for a versatile mountain bike;
from 60 to 100 € for a DH mountain bike;
from 50 to 90 € for an electric mountain bike.
Of course, many criteria can vary the price: store, resort, brand and characteristics of the mountain bike, adult or junior model, rental duration (more advantageous rate with a weekly rental than a daily one, for example), etc.
If you wish to do downhill biking or start from the summits for a bike hike, you will have to add the price of the pass for the ski lifts to access the start of the slopes (passes range from 15 to 30 € per day).
Where to rent an all-terrain bike in a resort?
Many Sport 2000 ski shops offer mountain bike rental during the summer, both in the Alps and in the Pyrenees or the Jura. We have established a list of resorts and shops where mountain bike rental is offered online, by phone and/or in-store.
Each shop will be able to offer you several types and brands of mountain bikes, but above all advise you to find the most appropriate model for you in its range, the adequate bike size, etc. The in-store team will also give you all useful information for good use of the mountain bike if you opt for an electric assist model.
So there's no need to hesitate: take advantage of all the benefits of mountain bike rental by making your reservation in a Sport 2000 store during your next summer stay in the mountains!
