4-season luge: enjoy sliding all year round
While everyone knows the classic winter luge, which is practiced in the mountains and in snowy countryside, luge is now available in many other formats: snowtubing, Snake Gliss, luge jump with Big Air Bag, etc., but also 4-season luge.
This rail attraction is developing more and more in mountain resorts, to the delight of young and old: discover more about the 4-season luge and let yourself be tempted by the experience, whether you come to the mountains with family, friends, or as a couple!
In summary
Want to experience the joys of sliding in any season? The 4-season luge is a rail attraction accessible all year round that will delight young and old during your mountain vacation. Combining thrills and safety thanks to a manual braking system, it is an excellent alternative to both winter and summer activities. Discover how these tracks work, their advantages for families and moderate budgets, as well as the main equipped resorts in France (Les Gers, Megève, Chamonix, Super-Besse, Mijoux, Artouste...).
What is 4-season luge?
The 4-season luge is an outdoor leisure attraction installed on rails fixed to the ground, usually found in the mountains. Unlike traditional luge, it operates all year round, including in summer, and sometimes in spring or autumn during school holidays.
The course takes the form of a winding descent of several hundred meters and sometimes over a kilometer, punctuated by banked turns, of small bumps, of bridges or elevated sections offering a continuous sliding sensation. The elevation change varies from one luge track to another, but you can generally descend a slope with several hundred meters of negative elevation!
Unlike rail rides in amusement parks, you have here a manual braking system, which allows you to adjust the speed as you wish, for a quiet descent or one richer in sensations.
For the ascent, no effort is required: you settle into a single-seater or two-seater luge, and thanks to the integrated ski lift system, you reach the top of the rails. Then, it's off for a Roller Coaster-style descent, guided by the metal structure!
4-season luge: a must for your mountain vacation
Have you never tried 4-season luge? Here are all the good reasons to take part in this fun activity during your stay at the resort!
An activity for (almost) all ages
4-season luge is accessible to young children, generally from the age of 3 or 5, or under minimum height conditions. At this age, it is mandatory for the child to be accompanied by an adult, to control the speed of descent and for safety reasons: it's therefore a great opportunity to spend time with family.
Slightly older children can, for their part, descend the slope on their own and enjoy a unique experience with the snowy mountain as a backdrop.
It's also obviously an activity open to adults, who can experience some thrills and observe the landscapes from a unique vantage point.
A leisure activity to practice in all weather
While winter sports and traditional luge require a sufficient layer of snow, 4-season luge is not subject to weather hazards. Thus, during your ski trip, it's a very good alternative if the luge tracks are not sufficiently snowy or if you want to vary the pleasures.
Even better, these luge tracks are open during the summer, to enjoy the joys of sliding even in the complete absence of snow. This type of installation allows resorts to vary their leisure offers, to satisfy families and other vacationers looking forfun outdoor activities.
Some 4-season luges also extend their opening during the mid-season, particularly during school holidays.
An inexpensive entertainment, for all budgets
Another strong point of 4-season luges is that they are accessible at a reasonable price.
The price of a descent is generally between 5 and 10 € (or even less for children, and sometimes even a free descent for the youngest). Depending on the resort, the price is valid for one person or for one descent (single-seater or two-seater).
Some activity passes and multi-descent packages also offer discounts.
For a few extra euros, you can also opt for a souvenir photo of your descent.
This type of family activity is therefore perfect for having a fun time, without breaking the bank.
Where to go rail luge?
Not all ski resorts are equipped with a rail luge, even if more and more of them are offering this kind of outdoor activity on their domain.
They can be found in all French massifs : 4-season Luge of the Les Gets resort (Alps), 4S Luge Les Portes du Mont-Blanc in Megève (Alps), Alpine Coaster of Chamonix with a view of Mont-Blanc (Alps), Super Coaster in Super-Besse (Massif Central), Rail luge of Mijoux (Jura), Lou Bac Mountain in Angles (Pyrenees), etc.
