When it comes to ski maintenance, waxing is impossible to ignore. This operation ensures smooth gliding and prolongs the life of your equipment. However, not everyone knows exactly what waxing involves, why it is so important for ski equipment, or how to achieve a proper wax job. Here is all the useful information and our advice for maintaining your pair of skis or snowboard.
Waxing involves applying a thin layer of special wax to the base of your equipment to optimize glide. This maintenance can be done on all types of snow sports equipment, from beginner alpine skis to racing skis, cross-country skis, snowboards, freeride skis, and more.
The first step is to clean the base of the skis or snowboard to remove old wax and dirt using a wax remover, a suitable scraper, and a brush.
Next, you will need several accessories to perform the actual waxing: a waxing iron, a wax block suited to snow conditions, and a workbench to properly position and hold the ski in place.
The process is not particularly complicated, but it does require some experience to apply the wax correctly. After setting the iron to the correct temperature (around 100°C, depending on the type of wax), apply the wax evenly across the base, including the edges, from tip to tail. It is important to apply it uniformly and sparingly to avoid damaging the base, while still laying down a sufficient layer of wax.
Waxing may seem tedious to some, but it remains essential for the following reasons:
Usually, new equipment comes ready to use (waxed and sharpened), so initial waxing is not necessary. Likewise, renting skis from a Sport 2000 store ensures that they are well-maintained and waxed as needed.
Generally, it is recommended to wax skis at the end of the season with a thick protective layer, then re-wax before the next season begins. For frequent and intensive use, skis or snowboards should be waxed every 3 to 5 outings, and before any competition.
With the right equipment and space, you can wax your skis yourself. However, choosing the right wax, applying the correct amount, performing the proper technique, and taking the time to do it correctly can be challenging.
To simplify the process and ensure high-quality waxing, it is recommended to bring your skis to a Sport 2000 store workshop. Most of our stores offer this service: bring your skis at the start of your trip and benefit from the expertise of our ski technicians! Prices vary by store, but on average, expect to pay between €7 and €15 depending on the equipment and wax used.
If needed, you can also request edge sharpening or repairs. A complete maintenance service ensures your skis remain high-performing on piste, off-piste, or in the snowpark, and last longer.
If you prefer not to worry about waxing or general maintenance, renting is likely the best option. You get not only recent, well-maintained equipment tailored to your needs (skill level, size, junior or adult models, etc.) at a reduced price, but also regular maintenance by the store team. Ski technicians also handle binding adjustments according to your body and skill level, providing fully ready-to-use equipment.
Of course, you can also rent other products from top brands for a complete winter sports outfit: ski boots, helmet, poles, and more. Plus, store sales areas allow you to purchase clothing, protection gear, and other accessories!
