What are the best free ski speed apps?

Ski apps: which ones to choose

Available on the Apple Store and Google Play, numerous free ski speed apps provide essential data: average speed, route tracking, challenges with other users, topographic maps, snow conditions, and more. All of these apps offer valuable information to make your skiing experience even more enjoyable. Here are some of the apps to prioritize during your winter vacation!

Our Selection of the Best Android and iOS Ski Apps

If you’re unsure which app to choose for your winter sports vacation, you can check download numbers and user reviews on the Google or Apple Store. To make things easier and help you gear up for skiing, we’ve listed the free apps worth considering here.

Ski Pursuit

Developed by the ski equipment brand Rossignol, this app records your daily performance. In addition to your maximum speed and average speed, Ski Pursuit also provides other features, such as elevation gain/loss and distance traveled.

It also displays a summary of your performance over an entire season (by day or hour) and maps your runs on a 3D topographic map.

This free ski speed app includes an "Autostop" feature that stops recording when your speed drops below 1 km/h.

You can also compare your stats and performance with friends by connecting Ski Pursuit to your Facebook or Twitter account and share information about your routes.

Ski +

This app is a full package that records your performance throughout your ski days. You can measure your performance, challenge friends, and save and share photos and videos.
Additionally, Ski + provides detailed information about the ski area you are in, including weather conditions and snow coverage both at the resort and on the peaks.

Ski Tracks Lite – A Reference Free Ski Speed App

This ski speed app offers a paid version, but its free version is quite comprehensive.

Ski Tracks Lite provides multiple data points: speed, distance traveled, number of runs, altitude, 3D maps, photos, and even free music.
Additionally, it is advantageous because it does not drain your smartphone battery excessively.

Snoww

Snoww provides all the essential data expected from a good ski app (distance, speed, altitude, weather, completed runs…). It also tracks calories burned and includes a system for comparing your stats with other Snoww users, as well as rewards and challenges within the Snoww community.

Ski Tracker

Ski Tracker is a free ski speed app that provides data such as average speed, calculation of fast runs, distance traveled, route taken, and track marking on maps.
Ski Tracker is therefore a complete app (also with a paid version, free for 30 days), available on iPhone and Android smartphones.

Unlike other free apps that display ads, Ski Tracker is an ad-free tracker.

The only major drawback: the app is relatively power-hungry, so it’s best to fully charge your smartphone before a ski session.

Useful Complementary Apps for Winter Sports

While ski speed apps provide precise information about your performance, here are some additional apps worth downloading for a winter mountain stay.

Bergfex Ski

In addition to French ski areas, Bergfex Ski provides information on many European ski resorts, including Austria, Poland, and Croatia. The app also offers real-time weather and snow condition updates and allows you to view webcams on the slopes. It also provides information about available accommodation rentals or ski equipment rental points, whether you are in major French resorts like Méribel or smaller family resorts like Chamrousse.

Ski Resort Mobile Apps

To complement your free ski speed app, most ski resorts have their own dedicated app. Sometimes, a single app covers multiple ski areas, such as the resorts in the Three Valleys, or N'PY, which includes 8 ski areas in the Pyrenees. Some resorts have developed their own app, such as Tignes or Font-Romeu Pyrénées 2000 (Alti Service).

In addition to highly detailed trail maps for each ski area, these apps provide real-time, precise information for skiers, such as the nearest first aid stations, open lifts and slopes (including their condition at opening), snow quality, and avalanche risk.

GPS Apps and Watches for the Mountains

Alongside your speed app, it’s wise to have a GPS system if you enjoy venturing off-piste (freeride, ski touring, backcountry skiing, etc.) and heading to the peaks. It’s an added safety measure and can serve as a tracker to locate yourself.

We’ve dedicated a full article to this topic, helping you find the best GPS solutions for skiing, including devices, watches, and Android/iOS apps.
